Local Status : Resident (SMP Status 1) Distribution and abundance : Widespread and common Habitats : Broad-leaved woodland, fens, grassland, gardens and heathland Flight Period : Single-brooded; June to September with peak emergence in August. Larval foodplants : Roots of herbaceous plants and probably also the roots of grasses (Gramineae) Morley's Final Catalogue : Fairly frequent, but by no means general. Not uncommon round Stowmarket (Nat. 1858, p. 60); both sexes occasional at Monks Soham light, Gorleston; Barton Mills in August (Mly). Wingspan details : Forewing male 12-18mm, female 15-26mm, Wingspan 32-48mm Identification
