Local Status : Resident (SMP Status 3) Distribution and abundance : Local Habitats : Open woodland, scrub, hedgerows, heathland and gardens Flight Period : Single-brooded; August to September Larval foodplants : birches, Blackthorn and hawthorns, sallows, Hazel, Crab Apple, oaks, Bell Heather and Heather Records : Stowmarket (H Chipperfield, 1965), Needham Market (C W Pierce, 1965), Groton Wood (A Watchman, 1978), Ipswich (A Hubbard, 1985), Barrow (A Parr, 1991, 1993 & 1997), Bradfield Woods (R Eley, 1991 & 1996; S Dumican, 2000), Bramford (S Ling, 1994), Minsmere (C Anderson, 1994 & 1995), Nowton (R Eley, 1995-6), St Olaves (J Crouch, 1997), Knettishall (M Hall, 1999), Eye (P Kitchener, 2000), Sicklesmere (S Dumican, 2003 & 2006) Morley's Final Catalogue : Broadly distributed inland; utterly lacking along our entire coast-line. Usually taken at light, though it is one of the few Bombyces that come to sugar. Bentley, Copdock (Hkg).; Ipswich at electric light in September 1893 (Mly), there in 1898 and at Needham in 1918 (Platten); a few larvae at Playford (Nat. 1858, 57; Ent. Wk. Int. 1856, 164). Beccles (Crf); several bred from Bungay garden larvae (Mn 1903). Bury (Skepper), two there (Norgate, 1900); Tuddenham. Wingspan details : Forewing 14-17mm, Wingspan 33-40mm Identification
